YouTube Tests AI Answers in Regular Search Results

YouTube is testing AI-generated answers at the top of ordinary search results, not just inside its Ask YouTube chatbot.

YouTube Tests AI Answers in Regular Search Results

YouTube has started testing AI-generated answers at the top of ordinary search results for some signed-in US desktop users searching in English, Social Media Today reported on October 18. Until now, users had to ask the separate "Ask YouTube" chatbot directly to get this kind of response; this test brings the same style of answer straight into a regular search query.

YouTube said the response appears "when a structured overview can add extra context beyond a standard list of videos," specifically for open-ended, how-to, or skill-based questions without one single right answer. The example query it gave was "how do I get marks off painted walls?"

The response at the top of the page includes a "Show more" option to view the full answer and ask follow-up questions. Scrolling past it reveals the standard video results as usual. YouTube said the test currently applies only to "select signed-in desktop users in the U.S." rather than its full user base.

Ask YouTube itself rolled out to all US users just last week as a standalone chatbot requiring a direct, conversational query. This new test widens the entry point considerably, since ordinary search queries typed as usual can now trigger a similar response. The article did not specify whether the search-results version uses the same underlying model or sourcing as the chatbot.

In a support post describing the test, YouTube said eligible users "may see an Ask YouTube response at the top of your search results," while anyone outside the test group sees the page unchanged. As a limited trial, it remains unclear whether or when this will roll out more broadly.

In Korea

Following Google Search's AI Overviews, AI-generated answers now appear to be working their way into YouTube search as well. Channels and brands relying on video content may want to start checking whether their videos get cited as sources in these AI answers, not just how they rank in the video list.
