HP to Preload Perplexity on New PCs While 7 Publishers Keep Suing It

HP announced on September 15 that it would preload Perplexity's Windows app directly into the taskbar of new PCs, starting with the ZBook Ultra G3a workstation. The same day, cloud provider Crusoe signed a multi-year deal to run Perplexity's model training and inference on Nvidia GB300 hardware.

Separate from that business expansion, Perplexity is facing seven active copyright lawsuits. Dow Jones and the New York Post filed first in October 2024, followed shortly by the New York Times and Chicago Tribune. Reddit, Encyclopaedia Britannica, and Merriam-Webster joined in fall 2025, and CNN filed suit on May 28 of this year, alleging more than 17,000 of its stories, videos, and images were used without authorization. Japan's Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun have also joined the litigation this year.

Publishers allege Perplexity scraped their journalism without licensing it to generate answers, while Perplexity argues this is the same "fair use" defense traditional search engines have long relied on. On July 31, a federal judge rejected Perplexity's motion to dismiss the Reddit case, allowing the core claims to proceed to further hearings.

In Korea

There's no copyright lawsuit against Perplexity in Korea yet, but the pattern of overseas publishers fighting back against how AI search uses their content keeps building. However these cases are ultimately resolved, they're likely to serve as precedent that Korean media outlets and publishers can draw on when deciding how much access to give AI search over their content.
