Study: ChatGPT Traffic Still Under 1% of Google Organic
An analysis of 100 sites found ChatGPT referral traffic came to less than 1% of Google organic search traffic.

SEO analyst Marie Haynes analyzed 145 million GA4 sessions across 100 sites over 12 months and found that ChatGPT referral traffic came to just 0.62% of Google organic search traffic. Search Engine Land reported the analysis on October 21. Combining referrals from all LLMs still only reached 0.73%.
That figure isn't ChatGPT's share of total site traffic. It's ChatGPT traffic measured against Google organic traffic set at 100. The article specifically flagged this distinction.
The sites analyzed varied widely in size, and the study pulled 12 months of Google Analytics 4 data from each. The exact collection start date and the mix of industries weren't disclosed.
Conversion rates told a different story. Among 55 sites that tracked conversions, 13.8% of ChatGPT visitors converted, compared with 3.02% of Google organic visitors. Per visitor, ChatGPT traffic converted at a notably higher rate.
But total conversion volume flips the picture. Because visitor counts differ so dramatically, Google organic drove 27 times more total conversions than all LLMs combined.
ChatGPT referral growth has also stalled. Haynes reported that referrals grew steeply through August of last year, then growth stopped and traffic has since declined.
Haynes wrote that "the AI search that is actually sending people to businesses today isn't ChatGPT. It's Google," and described GEO as "a distraction." The remarks point to a gap between industry talk of surging AI traffic and what the actual numbers show.
This isn't the first time such a claim has surfaced. But because it's based on 100 sites rather than one or two, some see it as resting on firmer ground than earlier versions of the same argument.
The analysis doesn't specify how conversions were defined, and it doesn't address how Google's own organic traffic changed over the same period. Whether today's low share holds going forward remains a separate question, the article added.
In Korea
The low current share of ChatGPT traffic relative to Google organic is now backed by harder numbers. Still, given the higher conversion rate, it may be worth tracking the quality of visitors ChatGPT does send rather than focusing only on volume. Watching conversion rate alongside raw traffic share seems like the more useful habit here.
