Google Confirms Reddit Gets "No Special Preference" in Search

Google has officially confirmed that Reddit receives no special preference in its search ranking systems. Google communications representative Jennifer Kutz made the statement in an interview with The Verge, according to Search Engine Watch.

Kutz explained that "there is high- and low-quality content on forums like Reddit, just as in other formats," and that Google's systems are designed to detect whether user-generated content is genuinely helpful rather than favoring any particular site. She added that Google has "strong protections against manipulation across Search, including our AI features, and we've kept results 99% spam-free for years."

The statement came as Reddit has repeatedly complained about not receiving sufficient traffic from Google. Reddit has argued that while its visibility in Google search results has grown significantly in recent years, the actual referral traffic hasn't kept pace, Search Engine Watch reported.

Concerns about AI-generated spam targeting Reddit also form part of the backdrop. Reddit's search visibility was shaken by Google's May core update and June spam update, and there have been growing reports of low-quality AI-written posts making their way into Reddit communities.

Google and Reddit's relationship traces back to a licensing deal signed in February 2024, worth roughly $60 million a year, which gave Google exclusive indexing access to fresh Reddit content while Reddit blocked other search engines via robots.txt. Despite that arrangement, Reddit recently described its search traffic as "choppy and volatile" in an earnings call, and its stock dropped 12.49% in after-hours trading following the announcement. Reports that a thread removed by moderators held the No. 2 search ranking for more than two months have only added to skepticism that Google's statement fully explains what's happening.
