Google has added its newest model, Gemini 4 Argon, to the model selection menu inside AI Mode. Search Engine Journal reported the change on October 13. Argon first launched on September 30 as a model aimed at coding, enterprise knowledge work, and cyber defense, initially made available to a limited set of cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program.
The version now available in AI Mode arrived the same day it opened up to developers, enterprises, and Gemini app users. Robby Stein, Google's VP of Product for Search, said it is "now rolling out globally in Search."
Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can select Argon from the "+" icon next to AI Mode's "Ask anything" bar. Developers can access it through the paid tier of the Gemini API, and Ultra subscribers can also use it inside Antigravity, Google's coding tool. The default model for free-tier AI Mode users is unchanged.
Stein said Argon "brings big improvements to tackling nuanced, multi-step tasks in AI Mode." Google's own launch post adds that the model "follows style instructions better than any of our previous Gemini models."
Google has not said which languages get the update first, or whether Argon will eventually become the default AI Mode model or remain an optional pick for subscribers. Because the rollout is gradual, availability may vary by account and arrive at different times.
The "multi-step tasks" Stein highlighted refer to a model's ability to carry context across a back-and-forth conversation rather than a single question, keeping earlier instructions and tone consistent across follow-ups, or handling a request broken into several ordered steps.
Since Argon was built first for coding, enterprise, and cyber-defense use, how it performs once applied to everyday search queries hasn't been independently verified yet. The Search Engine Journal reporter noted he hadn't seen it appear on his own Pro account at the time of writing.
This addition follows 3.7 Flash joining the AI Mode model menu on August 14 and 3.8 Flash on September 2, continuing Google's pattern of refreshing AI Mode's model lineup on a fairly short cycle.

Since answer quality on complex questions can vary by model, it's worth checking whether answers to the same question change once the new model becomes available on your account.
