Google Tests Rx Ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews

Google has started testing ads for branded prescription drugs and other pharmaceutical products directly inside AI Mode and AI Overviews. Adweek reported the test on October 12, and Search Engine Roundtable confirmed the same details the next day. A Google spokesperson told Adweek, "We're testing standard text and Shopping ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews, which we recently expanded to include certain pharmaceutical products."

Pharmaceutical advertising is widely considered one of the most heavily regulated ad categories. What stands out here is that these ads appear labeled "Sponsored" inside the AI-generated answer itself, rather than in a separate slot beside traditional search results. The test is currently limited to the United States.

The ad formats are the same standard text and Shopping ad types already used elsewhere in Google Ads. Google has not disclosed how many advertisers are participating or how much exposure the ads are getting. Search Engine Roundtable noted it had not personally been able to find a live example of these ads as of its report.

Google has run general-category ads inside AI Overviews since last year, but pharmaceutical products, which require disclosure language about side effects and usage restrictions, had stayed out of that mix until now. It is not yet clear how those disclosure requirements will be handled inside a compact AI-generated answer.

This is believed to be the first time Google has let a tightly regulated ad category sit directly inside a generative AI answer rather than beside it. It offers a concrete signal of how Google plans to monetize AI Mode and AI Overviews going forward, and raises the question of whether other regulated categories, such as financial products or insurance, could follow a similar path.

Mixing ads into an AI answer screen changes what the layout actually looks like. For the same question, a screen with an ad and one without can direct a user's eye to different things first. Brands now have more reason to separate paid placement from organic appearance when evaluating how they show up inside AI answers.

In Korea

Korea's pharmaceutical advertising rules are separately strict, so prescription drug ads are unlikely to arrive here anytime soon. Still, the broader shift toward carving out ad space inside AI answer screens is worth watching, even for brands that have only been tracking their organic presence so far. The same pattern could extend well beyond regulated industries as Google keeps testing ad placement inside AI-generated answers.
