Google has begun testing ads inside AI Mode for users who have Personal Intelligence turned on. Search Engine Land reported the news on October 16. The move reverses what had been an ad-free approach for this group.
Personal Intelligence lets AI Mode draw on summaries and insights from connected apps, such as Gmail or Google Photos, to produce more personalized answers. Until now, Google kept AI Mode free of ads for anyone using this feature.
That policy has now changed with this test. Insights from connected apps can be used not only to shape AI responses, but also to help select which ads a user sees. The same underlying data is now feeding both uses.
Google had previously treated Personal Intelligence as sensitive territory, choosing to withhold ads from users relying on it. This test marks the first time that boundary has been crossed.
Google said ads will still reflect a user's query, the context of the AI response, and their general interests. The company hasn't announced any new advertiser targeting options or a timeline for a wider rollout.
On privacy, Google drew a few lines. Advertisers can't access a user's connected apps directly, and the actual contents of Gmail or Photos aren't used directly in ads. Sensitive information is excluded from ad personalization as well.
Users can connect or disconnect apps at any time. Google said it updated its privacy policy to reflect the change, though the article didn't specify exactly which language was revised.
This test currently reaches only a subset of users. Still, tying personalization data to ad delivery marks a step toward AI search functioning as a more targeted advertising platform.
Because ads now vary by user, two people asking the same question in AI Mode may see different content on the screen. That gap could widen as the test expands.
Google has already tested several other ad formats in AI Mode and AI Overviews, including prescription drug ads and text-link-style ads. This announcement extends that pattern by bringing personalization data into the advertising mix as well.
In Korea
As ads tied to connected account data grow more common in AI Mode, the same query could surface different ads or recommendations depending on a user's settings. Comparing results across different account states is likely to matter more going forward.
