Google Puts Gemini 3.8 Live Behind "Search Live"

Google unveiled two new models on September 15, 2026: Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking. According to 9to5Google, Google described them as its "most advanced live dialogue models yet."

The base Gemini 3.8 Live model powers Search Live, the conversational search experience inside Google's AI Mode. Google says it processes visual input in near real time while keeping the conversation flowing naturally, and can keep talking while background tasks finish. With "Continue in background" turned on, the conversation keeps going even while the phone is locked or the user is in another app — meaning there's no need to even look at a screen to get an answer.

The model can detect and switch between 97 languages mid-conversation, and it ranked second on the Speech Agent Arena benchmark for cost-adjusted performance.

The Extended Thinking variant is aimed at multi-step work in products like Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live. Google says it reasons and speaks at the same time, using natural conversational phrases like "Let me check that…" while it works. 9to5Google reported that Extended Thinking began rolling out to Gemini Live the same day, though the source doesn't specify a regional rollout or timeline for Search Live itself. Search Engine Watch noted that Google's announcement came with no referral or click-through figures showing what effect the upgrade actually has, and advised site owners to test their own content directly rather than speculate — running their own frequently-asked questions through Search Live and noting which pages come up, whether the spoken answer names its sources, and whether follow-up questions get resolved without ever opening a website.

In Korea

The source doesn't say when or where Search Live becomes available in Korean. Given that the model is described as switching among 97 languages, there's little reason to expect Korean to be excluded, but the most reliable way to check is to look for the Search Live icon inside AI Mode in the Google app. Conversational voice search skips the usual back-and-forth of scanning a results page, so content structured to be easily summarized aloud may end up with an edge over pages built only for reading. Following Search Engine Watch's advice — testing your own site's likely questions directly in Search Live and logging what happens — is a faster way to find out than waiting for click data that hasn't been published yet.
