ChatGPT Tests "Best All-Rounder" Product Labels

A new display showing labels on ChatGPT's product recommendations has been spotted. Researcher Brodie Clark first shared the screens on X and SERP Alert, and Search Engine Roundtable reported the news on October 6. OpenAI has not made an official announcement.

In the screens Clark shared, every product carries a label. A primary label such as "best all-rounder" appears in green, while secondary attributes like "good for beginners" or "great cushioning" are shown separately in gray. It is a step up from simply listing products, making each item's distinguishing traits easier to pick out at a glance.

Search Engine Roundtable expects labels like these to help lift click-through rates on the products that carry them. What isn't disclosed is how a label such as "best all-rounder" gets assigned. Whether sellers can request or influence a label is also not known yet.

This test did not come out of nowhere. On October 2, OpenAI rolled out a virtual try-on feature that lets people see clothing on themselves from a photo, alongside a new favorites feature for saving products into folders. Both launched at once across mobile and web.

ChatGPT already offered product research, comparison, and personalized recommendations, and this label test sits on that same track. Until now, comparing products meant reading each product's description and judging for yourself. Once labels take hold, part of that judgment moves inside the ChatGPT screen itself.

Seen as one continuous flow from research to saving to comparison, labels look like the device that helps with the last step: choosing. Finding, saving, and even trying on a product were already covered, but picking one out of several candidates was still left entirely to the user.

So where the main question used to be simply whether a product showed up in a ChatGPT answer at all, once labels become a permanent feature, which label a listed product gets could become another variable shaping clicks. Even sitting in the same spot, a product with a green label and one without stand out very differently.

That said, this remains a test visible to only some users, and there's no word yet on whether or when it becomes permanent.

In Korea

Korean e-commerce brands now have something else to watch beyond whether a product shows up in ChatGPT's shopping recommendations at all: what label it gets once it does. If the labeling criteria become public, there may be room to adjust product descriptions or review content accordingly.
