UK digital marketing agency SEO Works analyzed its own client data and found organic search delivers 39 times more traffic than AI assistants like ChatGPT, Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 22. For every 100 conversions organic search generated, AI referrals delivered just 3.2.
SEO Works explained that "AI referral traffic converts worse against paid search (0.67x) and better against direct traffic (2.48x)." In other words, visitors arriving via AI convert less often than those from paid ad clicks, but more often than plain direct visitors.
An analysis by growth strategist Kevin Indig, covered in the same piece, reached a similar conclusion. Looking across 12 sites spanning different sectors and sizes, he found that direct traffic to longtail pages driven by AI isn't detectable yet at a meaningful scale.
Indig said, "We also can't yet find a reliable relationship between AI Visibility and branded search or direct traffic," adding he couldn't detect the effect across the 12 sites he examined. He left open the possibility that companies with unusually fast-growing AI traffic might be able to detect it.

Seeing low numbers for AI search referrals doesn't mean it's time to give up on the channel entirely. Rather than overestimating its impact, it's more realistic to build a habit of comparing AI referral traffic against organic and paid search side by side, conversion rate included.
