Google Tests AI Overview Format for Local Knowledge Panels

Google is testing a screen that turns the mobile local knowledge panel on Google Business Profile into an AI Overview format. According to Search Engine Roundtable, an "AI Overview" label now appears at the top of the knowledge panel, with a "Show more" button beneath it. Tapping that button switches the screen into an AI Mode style chat interface.

Google has already added AI Overviews and AI Mode to regular search results and the search box itself. This time, it is bringing that same format to the local knowledge panel, the screen that shows a business's hours, location, and reviews when someone searches its name.

The change was first spotted through a LinkedIn post by local SEO consultant Ben Fisher. Fisher captured the new AI Overview screen on a mobile knowledge panel and shared it, and a Search Engine Roundtable reporter confirmed the same screen firsthand.

The article said only that Google has been testing variations of this for a while, without giving an exact start date. It included a screenshot of the actual screen along with a GIF showing what happens after tapping the button into the chat interface.

The outlet has reported several times before on AI features added to Google Business Profile, including AI-written descriptions, review summaries, and an AI writing tool. This AI Overview shift was presented as part of that same pattern.

The reporter checked the AI Overview content on their own business listing and found it mostly accurate, though some service details were outdated. They said their own company website also has old content sitting on it, so the outdated information can't be blamed on AI alone. They added that while Google adding AI to every screen is no longer surprising, they still don't want AI writing the description of their own business.

Whether this feature appears on every Business Profile or only a limited test group is not stated in the source. There's also no word yet on whether it varies by industry or region, or when Google might roll it out officially.

In Korea

If AI is going to summarize business information on its own, whether that summary matches reality becomes something worth watching. Whether this change has reached Korean Google Business Profile accounts is not confirmed in the source.

If you run a business using Google Business Profile, check on mobile by searching your business name to see whether the knowledge panel shows an AI Overview label and Show more button. If it does, it's worth checking whether the business description inside it is accurate.
