Gmail Search's AI Overviews Expand Beyond the US

Google is expanding AI Overviews in Gmail search beyond the US. The feature lets people type a natural-language question into Gmail's search bar and get a concise summary or answer instead of digging through individual emails; it had previously been limited to US-based English-language users.

According to Google Workspace Updates, Rapid Release domains get a gradual, 15-day rollout from September 3 to 18, 2026, while Scheduled Release domains get full rollout within 1 to 3 days, from September 21 to 24. Consumer accounts also began a gradual rollout starting September 3.

Access is limited to paid plans. On the Workspace side, that's Business Starter, Standard and Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus, and AI Expanded Access subscribers; on the education side, it's Google AI Pro for Education. Consumer access covers Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, but personal accounts in the EEA, UK, Switzerland and Japan are excluded from this expansion.

Two more conditions apply. Admins have to turn on both "Gemini for Workspace in Gmail" and "Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail" before the feature switches on automatically, and end users need both "Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet" and "Google Workspace smart features" enabled. The account's language setting must be English. Google published separate admin and end-user help documentation covering the exact toggles.

"AI Overviews" is the name Google already uses for the summary panel on its Search results page. Reusing that name for Gmail search looks like part of a broader pattern of carrying the same summary-and-answer approach into other Google products. Gmail's version is scoped to what's inside a mailbox, though; nothing in this announcement mentions it citing web pages or showing sources the way Search's AI Overviews and AI Mode do.

Why it matters

Because the expansion is gated on an English-language setting, users running Gmail in other languages won't see the feature yet regardless of region. Organizations on Workspace should check their admin console for the Gemini and Workspace Intelligence toggles and confirm the account language before assuming the feature has reached them. The announcement doesn't say when, or whether, Google plans to extend this to other languages.
