ChatGPT's Reddit Citations Collapse 86% in a Month
A PromptWatch analysis found ChatGPT's Reddit citation share fell from 3.83% in late July to 0.52% by mid-August, while Google's AI products declined only modestly over the same period.

PromptWatch, tracking citation sources in ChatGPT Search, found that Reddit.com held a steady 3.83% citation share from July 18 through August 7, then collapsed to 0.52% between August 14 and 17 — an 86.4% drop.
Over the same window, Reddit citations also fell in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, but only by 11.3% and 30.5% respectively, far short of ChatGPT's decline, PromptWatch reported.
PromptWatch pinpointed August 8 as when things started to shift. Around that date, ChatGPT's search pattern itself changed: use of the "site:" operator to target specific domains jumped 46-fold, from 0.37% to 16.8% of all searches, while the average number of searches behind each response climbed from 1.08 to 1.83. There's no statement from OpenAI confirming a deliberate move away from Reddit, nor evidence to support one; PromptWatch's read is that the shift stems from a change in the underlying logic for selecting sources during search.
A drop in visible citations doesn't necessarily mean Reddit content stopped informing responses altogether — content can still be referenced during the search step even when it isn't credited as a source in the final answer, PromptWatch noted.

Korean community content — from Naver Jisik-iN threads to forum posts — is sometimes cited by overseas AI search tools like ChatGPT too, and this case shows how quickly a platform's search-behavior changes alone can swing that citation share. Relying on visibility from any single community or site is risky; spreading information across multiple channels is the safer bet.
