How to Check If You're Cited Evenly Across AI Search Engines

Strong citation performance on one AI search engine doesn't mean the same on another. Here's why each platform needs separate checking, and the steps to actually verify it.

How to Check If You're Cited Evenly Across AI Search Engines

Getting cited well by ChatGPT doesn't mean Gemini or Perplexity will cite you the same way. Each AI search engine builds its answers differently and draws on different pages. Here are the criteria and steps for checking whether your content is being cited evenly across AI search platforms.

Why doing well on one AI search engine isn't enough

Rankability analyzed 10 AI search platforms — including Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — across 31 topics and 1,645 query-page combinations, and found that no pair of platforms shared more than 24.1% of the same cited pages. Being cited on one doesn't guarantee citation on another, which means checking "am I cited by AI" requires testing multiple engines separately, not just one.

Why traditional search rank alone can't tell you

In the same analysis, pages in the traditional top 3 appeared in AI citations 98.9% of the time, but that dropped sharply to 44.8% once the scope widened to the traditional top 10. Conversely, 55.2% of pages in the AI-citation top 10 weren't in the traditional top 10 at all. A high search ranking doesn't automatically carry over to AI citation, and a lower ranking doesn't rule it out either — the two metrics shouldn't be conflated.

Why focusing on a single query or topic puts you at a disadvantage

Pages that appeared across eight or more distinct queries made the AI-citation top 10 43.3% of the time, compared to just 15.5% for pages tied to a single query. Pages covering a broader topic range also fared better, at 27.6% versus 14.5% for narrowly focused pages. The more related questions a page answers, and the wider the range of adjacent topics it covers, the better its odds of AI citation.

Steps to check

  1. Run your content-related questions through major AI search engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and others) individually and log whether each one cites you. For a concrete method, see How to Check If AI Mentions Your Company Yourself.
  2. Put your traditional search ranking and AI citation status side by side in the same table to see directly how much they overlap.
  3. Count how many queries or questions a given page shows up across, and if that number is low, add related sub-questions to broaden its coverage.

Checking all three together gives you a concrete picture of which AI search engines cite your content and where you need to improve.
